Dental studies have found no negative effects on root canal-treated teeth near implants
A recent dental study delved into the fascinating areas of root canal treatment (RCT) teeth and their interaction with dental implants.
The primary objective of this retrospective case-control study was to evaluate the survival rate of RCT teeth located in the vicinity of dental implants and to compare them with RCT teeth within the same patient that were not adjacent to implants.
Methodology and patient cohorts
To carry out this comprehensive analysis, RCT teeth adjacent to dental implants were carefully selected to form the test group. In contrast, the control group consisted of RCT teeth from the same patient, but these teeth were not adjacent to the dental implant and were of the same type as the RCT tooth in the test group. The study included a total of 36 teeth from 72 patients, each of whom was followed for at least four years.
The study also examines various clinical and demographic parameters, including factors such as age, sex, tooth type and location, presence of crowns, retreatment, presence of piles, proximity to edentulous areas, presence or absence of implant-supported fixed restorations on antagonistic teeth and periapical health.
Key findings: Implants had no adverse effect on RCT teeth
The results of the study provide reassuring insights for patients and dental professionals. The results showed no significant difference in survival between RCT teeth adjacent to dental implants and teeth without dental implants (p=0.72). In addition, no significant correlation was established between the clinical variables examined and the survival rate of teeth in RCTs (p>0.05).
However, the study did reveal specific factors that affect survival time. Notably, the presence of adjacent edentulous areas had a significant effect on survival time (P<0.001), as did periapical health (P=0.026). Teeth with unhealed periapical tissue showed a shorter cumulative survival time, while teeth adjacent to the edentulous region showed a lower cumulative survival time and uncomplicated survival time.
The focus of the study
This study is clinically important as it marks the first systematic comparison of the survival outcomes of RCT teeth adjacent to dental implants with non-adjacent RCT teeth within the same patient. The results showed that proximity dental implants did not adversely affect the survival time or survival rate of RCT teeth.
Essentially, this study provides valuable insights for dentists and their patients, allowing RCTs to successfully coexist with dental implants, offering a promising perspective for dental treatment.
